take it easy

as much as i don't understand this country or culture, they do one thing right: carnival. carniavl is the three to four day party/festival before the catholic holiday of lent begins. a huge deal in most latin american countries, here it means everyone and their mom has motor oil, paint and mud ready to invoke a fury of hell on anyone who walks by. what does this mean exactly? well my friends, it means the dirtiest, best few days ecuador has to offer.

since we were all out of durán over the weekend in ballenita, we missed any action that may have taken place. so monday was our start date. compared to years passed, according to ecuas but what do they know, this year was tame. chris and marie were repeatedly thrown into mud puddles and hammered with motor oil and paint. i was made blue as a smurf by eduardo, then played ecua volley for an hour or so.

tuesday, however, well tuesday was the big show. scott and i bought about nine bags of powdered paint and went crazy. my first stop was glenda's. she was the big competition. and she was ready. she had buckets and bottles of paint and motor oil waiting. i walked away from her house about as purple as barney, but not before i painted glenda and her daughter valeria like big bird.

the next stop was my street. abrahan, who lives across from my house, was ready. scott, abrahan and i got each other good. abrahan really liked throwing us down in the mud and covering us from head to toe. all in all, by the time the day was over i had about 8 different colors of paint on my face and purple hair, which stayed that way for three days. what a holiday.
