i can't wait for the world cup. i was never into football (soccer) growing up. in fact, i remember hating it. i wasn't even that into it while i lived in ecuador. but once i returned and moved to LA, football became a way to connect and keep that part of my life alive. i watched all the ecuadorian WC qualifying matches. i was actually in ecuador last october when they fell out of contention for a WC berth (talk about depressing). but since i've moved to spain, my interest and love for the sport has only grown. real zaragoza is the local team, but they're pretty bad. so i've taken up fc barcelona (much to the chagrin of many of my students) as my adopted team. while they didn't win the champion's league (inter-milan just won the championship game 2-0), they did win la liga (the spanish league). for my birthday, i bought myself a spanish national jersey (to wear during the world cup). it was a hard decision which jersey to buy, as my friends can attest. i debated between buying a fernando torres jersey (a striker for spain) and xavier "xavi" hernanez (a midfielder for the spainish national team and barcelona). in the end, after much debate and insight from santi, i went with xavi. i really hope spain advances far in the tournament. it'd be crazy to be here if they won.

random thoughts for may 22, 2010
it's been a good month so far. i turned 25 a few weeks ago. man. it's not old, but it seems old. twenty-five. i thought a lot about what i've done/seen/accomplished in those 25 years on that day. i've noticed that i live life with a sense of urgency. i'm in a hurry to do and see as much as possible, as if it was going to end tomorrow. that's not necessarily a bad thing. i've been to six countries (trying to break 50 like grandpa!), picked up a second language, graduated from college, and over all done some really cool stuff. but the down side to living like that, and what i need to work on, is enjoying the day to day, little moments. i've always struggled with "being present," and my awareness of this fact was heightened while i lived in ecuador, but it's still something i want to improve on. regardless, i had a good time celebrating my 25th year on earth. the weekend before i went to barcelona (yet again) and hung out with mike, aneliza, nandi & shannon. we went to bharma, a lost-themed bar, and watched an episode of "lost" (i'm a huge "lost" nerd and loved every second of it), walked around the city a lot, saw la sagrada familia, and watched a lot of football. the weekend after my birthday, mike came to visit in zaragoza and i got to show him around the city a bit. my actual birthday was pretty low key and like any other day except it was full of messages, e-mails and phone calls from friends and family around the world. not a bad way to start the next quarter century.
