what the whaaaaat?!

how is it already april? in many respects the (almost) four months i've spent thus far in spain have flown by and dragged on. since my last post, it's been one crazy world.

italy 2010!!!

italy was a blast. it was a party in the usa ... err. nevermind. a few weeks ago i traveled to italy with maggie, ben, and emily. we went to florence. i saw michelangelo's david, drove a 40 year-old fiat 500 through the streets of florence and through the tuscan country side to a vineyard, visited the duomo (a church which boasts the world's first dome), visited the basilica di santi croce (first franciscan church in the world and host of the tombs of michelangelo and galileo). we went to rome. i visited the trevi fountain. the coliseum. the forum. vatican city. st. peter's basilica & square. the sistine chapel.  in short, it was a jam-packed, but fun, trip. maggie's sister emily did an amazing job of planning the trip.

socialized health care

i also had my first experience with socialized healthcare and the expereience was ... great. because i am a british citizen (thanks dad!), i was able to apply for residency here in spain. residency allowed me to work, which allowed me to access social security, which allows me access to the free, public healthcare. for all the bruh-ha-ha made over socialized medicine by many in the united states, i found the experience to be better than any doctor's visit i've ever had in the states. first, i was in and out in less than a half hour. second, i didn't have to pay anything to see the doc. third, my prescriptions cost less than €10. so in my book, socialized health care 1, private health care 0.

now i know that's a sweeping generalization of a system based on one isolated experience, but that's all i've got to go off right now. actually being sick, and the legislation passed in the states, led to a lot of discussion in my classes about health care. it was a great way to hear other perspectives on health care.
ben, maggie, and me in florence.
